For most children, home is a place of refuge and safety where they are surrounded by people who love, protect and care for them. For other children, however, the reality of home is very different. It is a place of neglect, fear, intimidation and pain .... a place where they are subjected to indifference or abuse at the hands of people they love and trust.
Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter's reason for being is to offer a safe haven to these children; to show them that there are people in the world who are kind and loving; and to help them begin to heal. Through counseling, medical care, education and activities, children experience a sense of normalcy in their lives, many for the first time.
In spite of the name, the Children's Shelter is not just a Benton County or even a northwest Arkansas organization. As shown by the map below, children from all over the state of Arkansas are referred to and served by the Shelter.

TheNeed For Care And Services For These Children In Crisis is growing each year. Consider these statistics:
Each day in Arkansas... 82 children are confirmed to be abused or neglected
8 children are confirmed to be sexually abused
18 children are placed in foster homes
1 child dies before his/her 1st birthday as a result of abuse or neglect
Even though 471 of these abused and neglected children were cared for at the Shelter in 2009, more than 600 were turned away because of limitations in space and funding. That is why we have undertaken this campaign.
WE WANT TO DO MORE TO MEET THE GROWING NEED!
Money raised in this capital campaign will establish an endowment that will help support the operations of a new, larger facility, build two long-term group homes, and help ensure a more positive future for children whose lives have been touched by abuse and neglect.
